Background: The Seniors Working Group (the “SWG”) is a collaborative team made up of representatives from Dunbar Heights United Church, Knox United Church, St. Mary’s Anglican Church, St. Phillip’s Anglican Church, St. Stephen’s United Church, Shaughnessy United Church, University Hill Congregation and West Point Grey United Church.
Our Vision is to help Seniors age with vitality and expanded options, in part through building sustainable pastoral care within our congregations and, in the wider community, by working with change agents so more Seniors might age with hope and meaning.
• To strengthen the capacity and scope of pastoral care within congregations, primarily on the Westside.
• To continue exploring and learning about life-affirming options.
• To offer public forums exploring topics relevant for seniors and their adult children.
• To enhance the accessibility and breadth of services for seniors and their adult children through collaborative working relationships with other denominations, community groups and government service providers.
In the past two years the Seniors Working Group has hosted public talks for Seniors and their families on Dementia Caregiving in Christian Community, Aging Well in Community: Cohousing and Seniors, Navigating Support Services for Seniors at Home (Aging in Place), Living the Risk with Isobel Mackenzie, the BC Seniors Advocate, and recognizing symptoms of and supporting those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
SWG has provided training opportunities on pastoral care, including a prayer workshop and enrichment training for pastoral care workers.
